Thoughts On The New Guild Wars 2 Daily Achievement System

Flame and Frost has brought with it a new Daily Achievement system to Guild Wars 2. It's not really a new system but changes the way Daily Achievement works a bit by adding random objectives to be done daily. Of course not all players will like it but some are just overreacting and protesting just because they like to whine.

The argument is that the new system forces players to do what they don't usually do and since Guild Wars 2 is a game where you can do whatever you want this is a bad thing. My answer is, if you don't want to do the dailies because you don't like being told what to do, then just don't do it, that seems simple enough isn't it?

What makes me annoyed is that what some of these people meant crafting and dodging as the things they don't like to do. Really now? you do realize that on a regular play you should be dodging pretty regularly and the daily dodging achievement will only take about 10 to 20 minutes tops to get right? And if you never dodge, are you going to whine when you can't finish the dungeons because it's "too hard"? seriously now. And crafting 10 items are too tough for you? it only involves you cutting down some trees or mining some copper on the starting areas and just craft 10 crappy beginner items, it won't even waste 10 minutes. I don't know what these people are whining about.

These new achievements are not forcing anyone to do anything, but instead they encourage players to try out different things. But if it's encouragement why do they give out laurels which can be traded for ascended gear? well because it wouldn't be much of an encouragement if it doesn't offer any good reward you dolt. And the idea of a daily achievement system forcing you to d anything is just ridiculous. If you can't be bothered to do these stuff then don't. But if you want that laurels, then do it. No one is forcing you t do it.

"But I want the ascended gear without having to do these silly dailies!". I'm sorry, what? that sounds like a bunch of whining from a bunch of entitled jackasses. If you want something then you'll have to do something. Want those nice looking dungeon gears? do some dungeon runs! want those titles, finish the achievements! heck, the new dailies system are actually giving us all a favor by adding another way to get Ascended gear without having to do Fractals of the Mist. ArenaNet is giving us more options but people just have to whine about it.

Now, there are some good concerns about the new system in that they encourage bad behavior. To get the daily revive achievement people will deliberately stand around and not help out other players who are in need, just to swoop in later to revive them. Or maybe there are players who are not helping in events but instead just rolls around to get the dodge achievements. This is a valid argument, but I believe the effect is nothing really major and are just a minor annoyance.

For those of you who are wondering "this new daily achievement system should've encouraged players to go to the less populated areas and they said that we can just do X out of X daily objectives to finish the daily achievement, what happened?" the answer is, be patient as ArenaNet has stated that they're going to implement that one in February. The current update on the Daily Achievement is only the first part, it's there to implement the laurels.

In my opinion, these changes are for the better. The new system does encourage people to do different things than usual and that's good. Never tried crafting, try it out! never dodge around? now dodge around! never knew what a skill combo is? try it out! now you know! The system encourages players to be better and it encourages people to enjoy the game fully. And that's always good.
